Summer goal recap

Second post for the day...figured since it's the last day of my summer goal time period, I should post my results.

**My goal is to read at least 8 books before August 31.**
(I will attempt to review them here, also.)

According to my goodreads profile, I read 16 books

My other summer goals:
**Blog twice a week. DONE!
**Keep my flowers alive and the weeds pulled.  SUCCESS!!
**Exercise at least 4 times a week. FAIL!
**Scrapbook 15 layouts.  I think I got 10 done this summer
**Finish the two projects on my knitting needles (scarf; doll skirt). DONE!

I did better that I thought I would.... We'll see how my fall goals go.

Our 20 seconds of fame....

Remember this post  and this post?

Well, we rented it, just to see it.  In our opinion, it was terrible (as in I would give it 1 star...)!!! We had heard from people who had seen it when it played in our area that it was bad, but....wow! It's a dark story, the editing it awful (it had the feel of a high school film class project), some of the acting is pretty bad, too.

The best parts for us were seeing places we knew and seeing the characters wearing shirts and hats from local businesses.  Oh, and did I mention....our house and garage are in it for 20 seconds?
Yeah, that was cool!
I have to say, our house looked really nice.

If you see it, prepare yourself for tractors, sex, race cars, sex, violence, sex....you get it.

Happy last day of August - enjoy your weekend!

Rescue me....

So an interesting discussion came up amoungst my co-workers. I'll call it "hot guy occupations". We are all readers and we were discussing if we were in a romance novel, who would we want to be our hero.

The top occupations were:
Fireman
Construction worker
Military serviceman

I would like to add my own personal favorites:
Athletes
Cowboy

So, join in....who would you want to be YOUR hero?

Music Monday

This song (Wake Me Up) by Avicii popped up on my Pandora last night. It stuck in my head and I thought I would share.
Happy Monday!

You may not know...

...but THIS is me!

I am a wife to this guy
for almost 16 years. (Wow!)

A mom to these two

he for 20 years,
she for 9.
(Although sometimes I would like to NOT claim them...)

The big 4-0 is coming, and I'm ok with that.
I'm content with where my life is at this point.
I am a scrapbooker
I am an avid reader. (I'm always up for taking reading suggestions...) [I'm on Goodreads]
I enjoy crocheting and knitting. [I'm on Ravelry]
I am a budding photographer.
I enjoy traveling (real life and armchair).  [one of my bucket list items is to visit all the National Parks and Historic Sites]
I am not a good cook, but love my crockpot. My family at least pretends to enjoy my cooking...  ;)
I work two jobs: full time for an ag lending company and part time at our local library. I enjoy both of them!
If you visit me at home, you will not find a spotless house but I will make you feel welcome in my home.
I am naturally a peacemaker - I hate drama and fighting.
My favorite color is blue.
My favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz.
My favorite candy bars are Snickers and Milky Way.
I like coffee.

If there's something else you want to know about me, leave a question in your comment and I'll do a "get to know Jen" segment soon.

Thanks for stopping by!

Fall is coming

Hey friends! Autumn is just around the corner, hooray!  (Although we're supposed to back in the upper 90s by mid-week) Today I am linking up at Forever Newly Wedded for her Fall link up.  I'm also linked to A Different Kind of Woman for her fall link up. I have a mini bucket list for this fall (Sept-Nov).

1. Apple picking. We have several orchards near us and I believe in supporting your local ag industry.

2.  Fall color photo shoot. I want to go out on a beautiful fall day and capture those colors!

3. My hobbies. I want to: scrap 10 layouts; finish my sweater I'm knitting; and start my quilt wallhanging (yes, the one I've been going to start for almost 4 years now...).

4. Family hike. I want to go for a hike somewhere for a day with my husband and kids.

5. Pinterest. I want to make at least two crafty/decor projects from my "Fall" board.

My Summer Goals aren't going as well as I had hoped, but I will update you on those at the end of August.

Go check out Karla's and Heather's blogs and the other blogs in the link up.

I like them

One of my goals this year is to make and send 25 cards. So far I've finished 14, it's August.... I'm not sure I'm going to make it.

Anyway-I got up early yesterday and since I had the house to myself (a real rarity...), I decided to make a couple of cards.

A birthday card for my nephew...teenage boys are tough to design for.
I used stash paper and the Happy Birthday is from Stampin' Up!
The other one I will reveal soon (I don't want it seen by the receiver before she gets it).

Have a great Wednesday!

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW! First, thank you to those who are among my several regular readers I love your comments and try to respond to them (please don't be a 'no reply' - that makes me sad). Second, thank you to my fellow bloggers who send me a response to a comment I leave on your blog - if I've visited, I'll at least give you a 'hi'.

I have loved becoming more entrenched in the blogging community, I love that I can post and ramble on about something or nothing and someone seems to find something to comment about. I have found SO many fantastic blogs out there (especially in the past few months). There are blogs on almost any topic or way of life you could possibly think of.

I would like to direct your attention to the left column here (the list AND the buttons below it)
<=============
There are some FANTASTIC and REALLY fun blogs here - please check them out and leave them a comment.

A little tip (and request) - if you are visiting a new blog, let them know where you are visiting from. I always like to know if it's from a link up or just from a comment I left on another blog.  Ya know?

Happy blogging and blog reading!
And if you have a blog to recommend for me to check out - post a link to it in your comment.  Thanks!

Special Needs

The term special needs to me is an umbrella term that covers SO many different things! Miriam-Webster defines "special needs" as: the individual requirements (as for education) of a person with a disadvantaged background or a mental, emotional, or physical disability or a high risk of developing one.
That is a very broad definition!
How did we get on this merry-go-round?
This is our story:

Our DD was born with a moderate hearing loss. A lot of people asked how we found out - she failed her hearing test at birth and another one at 10 days old. Thus, began our journey. We were scared at first and did a little crying and worrying, but then realized that if this was the worst of our obstacles, she (and we) would be fine!  Let me tell you, there was A LOT of frustration for us the first few years. We just went through our regular developmental evaluations and hearing tests.

At about four, her hearing loss went from moderate to severe/profound. I was devastated! I just remember crying when they told us it had taken a big downward turn. But again, you learn to plug on and take each day as it comes.

We went through all the applications of assistance and different agencies we were referred to. We filled out application after application for five years and were always told the same thing, "You make too much for us to help you." Then we would hear from her hearing mediators, "Have you thought about hearing aids?"  Well....ummm - YES!  However, until $5,000 falls in my lap, it's not going to happen - SADLY!!!!!!!!!  I wanted more than anything to be able to give her the gift to hear things that so many of us hear (birds, leaves rustling, lighter - more high pitched sounds).

She finally started kindergarten, about halfway through the school year her school hearing itinerant referred us to an agency we had not tried or heard of. So, we shrugged and figured - let's give it a try. We applied and fell into a bed of roses.
FINALLY - someone who would be able to help us!
We had to do LOTS of paperwork and provide LOTS of proof of LOTS of things but each step forward we made, felt like a victory.  DD used an FM system through most of kindergarten and found that it helped tremendously, especially in hearing her teachers and when working with small groups of her classmates.
Enter, 1st grade - September, 2010 - this glorious day (WOW!) arrived. It was a day of happy tears and what felt like a miracle. She became a different kid - she heard more, seemed to participate more and be more tuned into the world around her. It was SO fantastic! There are days it still amazes me. She called me from school about a week after she got her hearing aids (with her hearing itinerant) to tell me she heard a bird chirp when she went outside with Ms. M. I think I just sat and cried for about 5 minutes after I hung up with her, then called DH to tell him!

She has become very independent and takes care of her hearing aids well. We are still working with the same agency and they continue to be supportive and helpful.

This photo is what 9 1/2 years of meetings, IEPs, appointments and correspondence looks like (believe me - that briefcase weighs a ton).

I wouldn't trade this road for any other and am grateful to all who have supported and helped us along the way!

Sentimental Mom

This post is about my kids!

Lately, I find myself amazed at how pretty great my kids are - if I do say so myself.

I always worry about them - their safety, their well being and what they want from life (and if that life will be kind in return). I hope they will grow up to be respectful, polite, caring adults.
I am also amazed that despite their age difference (10 years), that they are such good friends and get along really well (most of the time)! There is a bond between them that I wish all siblings knew. DS adores his little sister and has since the day she joined our family. DD looks up to her big brother and wants to be like him in so many ways. They joke around and laugh together (there so many 'inside jokes' between them...). They pick each other up when it's needed, with not much more than a hug. They're both naturally peace makers, so they don't fight (too much).

Like any parent, I hope that their relationship stays that way for all their lives.

The Tourists-Commanders in Chief, Civil Righs & 'Cue, part 2

HAPPY AUGUST!!!!!!!!!!!

The first leg of our vacation can be found HERE

Day 4
Father's Day!
Yes, that's right...after being up late the night/morning before (DH & DS fell into bed at almost 2 a.m.) and trying to decide if we were going to pack it in for the rest of the trip, head home and get the windows fixed, or ride out the rest of our vacation, we decided to finish our stay in Independence (Sunday night was our last night booked there) and we would think about it during the day.

Sooooo - DH & DS left the hotel early to go find a car wash with a vacuum to clean up all the glass inside the van and repatch the back windows.  They did a great job!!!
After a quick breakfast, we drove into Kansas, with a few stops on our agenda.

We arrived at BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION NHS in Topeka. We walked through the museum, learned some about the case and it's affect on civil rights at that time.

We drove on to Abilene, had some lunch

Then headed onward to EISENHOWER LIBRARY AND MUSEUM - there is an incredible military museum, his boyhood home and President & Mrs. Eisenhower's final resting place.

On the way back toward Kansas City, DH asked if DD & I would be interested in going to the OZ MUSEUM  in Wamego (he had seen billboards on the way to Abilene). We said sure and are glad we stopped. It is off the interstate quite a ways, but it's a fun museum and store.

They had a display of the Oz "spinoffs" and DS found this college age spinoff and the picture almost killed him - he made a fool of himself he was laughing so hard.  Now, I agree - it is pretty funny!
I give you "frat boy scarecrow"!

When we got back to Kansas City, we tried Oklahoma Joe's (closed on Sundays) so ended up at Bandana's for dinner. We were all physically and emotionally drained by that point, the food wasn't good and the service terrible.
I spent almost an hour on the phone with the insurance company when we got back to the hotel, attempting to set up a 'fix it' appointment for the windows. When I finally hung up, I had a phone number for a glass repair place in Arkansas (where we were headed next)...

And as those of you who visit here semi-regularly know, my children can't take a nice picture without a crazy one.  This is their self-portrait - I didn't know they'd taken it until we got home and was going through our pictures...
Thanks, kids!

Stay tuned - there's more adventures and window saga to come.
