Book blurbs

Good morning! I am linking up with TASTY BOOK TOURS again this week to bring you some book blurbs from the romance novel, Too Hot to Handle by Katie Rose.

PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS:

Katie Rose’s Boys of Summer series returns for a delicious double-header—with the story of total opposites who are drawn to each other like moths to a flame.
Nikki Case is no fan of baseball. Her ex gambled away a fortune on the sport, and now her PR firm has tasked her with cleaning up the league’s most notorious bad boys. The New Jersey Sonics are known for wild womanizing and booze-fueled brawls, so Nikki expects the worst. Her first stop in the battle to win hearts and minds is star hitter Jake Baldwin—a legendary ladies man so smokin’ he threatens to melt her tough-girl armor.

Although his teammates prank her without mercy, Jake admires the way Nikki gives as good as she gets. She may be the queen of frost, but there’s kindling beneath those sultry curves—and he’s just the man to ignite it. But when a PR nightmare lands the Sonics in headlines across the country, Nikki is ready to walk. Only then does Jake realize how important she is to the Sonics’ success—and that winning the love of a good woman is no game.
EXCERPT:
"Hey, bro!" Ryan Wakeman strode into the MIXX bar at the Borgata Casino and waved at the Sonics shortstop. Jake Baldwin was, of course, surrounded by girls. A cute little blonde hopped off the stool as Ryan approached, and she blew Jake a kiss when he made it clear he was occupied.

While not the best-looking member of the team—Chase Westbrook held that title—Jake’s little-boy looks, sandy-blond hair, wide blue eyes, and sexy smile attracted women immediately. Charm he had in buckets, and when he turned the full force of his personality on an unsuspecting female, she was done.

The first baseman grabbed the recently vacated stool and signaled to the bartender for a drink. A shot of tequila appeared before him, along with an icy draft. He gave his teammate a questioning look at the amount of alcohol even as he downed the clear liquor.

"It’s off-season," Jake said with a grin. "We don’t start spring training for a week yet. Plenty of time."

"Apparently not for all of us." Ryan gestured to the couple across the bar. Chase Westbrook, their ace pitcher, sat with his girlfriend, Darcy Hamilton, and was nursing a club soda. He seemed to sense their perusal and sent Jake a grin as well as a nod.

"He has to behave himself. He’s got the wife with him."

Ryan chuckled. "She isn’t yet, but I think it’s just a matter of time." One brow arched and he looked at Jake speculatively. "So I’m already married, Chase is on his way. What about you? Think you’ll ever settle down?"

"Not my style," the shortstop said, and then looked at his teammate with curiosity. "I don’t know how you do it. We’re on the road all the time, a different state every week. And with spring training in Florida, there are just too many opportunities to meet girls. Some of them are so damned gorgeous. How do you stay committed?"

"That’s easy," Ryan said. "It really is true—when you find the right one you just don’t want to cheat. Not that I don’t like to look. But that’s all."

Jake just shook his head. "I’ve got to hand it to you and our buddy over there." He indicated Chase. "He’s smitten. Never seen him happier."

"I know. The man’s done."

Jake nodded and then gestured to the bartender for another round. When the woman approached, she gave him a sexy smile.

"Hey, honey," she whispered, leaning closer to the shortstop. "What are you doing later?"

She wore a badge that said Desiree and her voice was rich with promise. Jake allowed his eyes to travel from the top of her platinum-blond head down.

Apparently he liked what he saw. "I’m meeting someone for a couple of drinks," he confided with a wicked smile. "But I should be able to stop back before closing."

"Sounds good." She bent down to get the bottle of tequila, and Jake saw a long length of tanned thigh. His eyes met Ryan’s, and the first baseman shook his head and grinned.

As if on cue, one of the Borgata waitresses, a sultry redhead, entered the bar. She glanced around, and then spotted Jake. Waving enthusiastically, she pushed her way through the crowd and joined him.

"Sorry I’m late." The redhead kissed the shortstop’s cheek and gave Ryan a little finger wave. Her uniform boasted a plunging neckline, which showed off magnificent surgically enhanced breasts, and a skirt so short it barely covered her bottom. "I got held up at the table."

Jake gave her a kiss in return. "Did you win?"

"Yes, a couple hundred bucks. Drinks are on me!" she said enthusiastically and then turned to the bar. Immediately, her smile disappeared as her eyes locked on the bartender. The tension crackled between them as the cool blonde and the hot redhead sized each other up like two cats in the same barnyard.

Monday again...

Good morning! How do the weekends go so fast?!

We didn't "do" much this weekend but it was nice.  We just relaxed at home Friday night.

Saturday, I got the house cleaned and laundry caught up (that won't last long!). It felt good to have that done though. I made a homemade pizza for dinner and prepped some cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Sunday.

Yesterday, we had cinnamon rolls and cleaned up breakfast. We did lazy Sunday morning stuff - coffee; TV and eventually showers. We took Little Miss and one of her friends to Disney on Ice for an early birthday present. It was a good show - nothing like 8000 kids ALL singing Let it Go!  The traffic, as usual, at the United Center was horrible! UGH!!!  People need to learn how to drive.

We DIDN'T watch the Grammys - so I have no idea what happened there (and I guess I don't really care...).

Looking forward to a quiet week (as scheduled now).

I hope you all had a nice weekend and a good upcoming week!

Book review

Today I am doing a book review for a blog book tour at TASTY BOOK TOURS.

Genre:  Romance, mild heat

Publisher's blurb:
New York Times bestselling author Karen Ranney's first novel in a brand-new series spins the intriguing story of a beautiful widow and a devilishly handsome shipbuilder...

Seven years have passed since Glynis MacIain made the foolish mistake of declaring her love to Lennox Cameron, only to have him stare at her dumbfounded. Heartbroken, she accepted the proposal of a diplomat and moved to America, where she played the role of a dutiful wife among Washington's elite. Now a widow, Glynis is back in Scotland. Though Lennox can still unravel her with just one glance, Glynis is no longer the naïve girl Lennox knew and vows to resist him.

With the American Civil War raging, shipbuilder Lennox Cameron must complete a sleek new blockade runner for the Confederate Navy. He cannot afford any distractions, especially the one woman he's always loved. Glynis's cool demeanor tempts him to prove to her what a terrible mistake she made seven years ago.

As the war casts its long shadow across the ocean, will a secret from Glynis's past destroy any chance for a future between the two star-crossed lovers?

My thoughts: This is a Civil War era romance set in Scotland. The characters are likable and believable. The storyline has twists and intrigue. You should pick this one up!

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Grandpa

My grandpa passed away a few weeks ago. He went peacefully while he and grandma were wintering in Corpus Christi, TX. He was 90 and had been married to grandma for 67 years.

Their wedding day - September, 1947

 On their 60th anniversary - September, 2007

He was one of 7 children. He and grandma had 9 children of their own. (Who in turn have led to 32 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren [to date])
My grandpa was not a real cuddly kind of guy. He didn't get too excited over a baby. He was happy to give you "five" or sit and talk for a while. He loved to tell stories and had a memory that amazes me.
He battled cancer and won. He suffered with emphysema and heart ailments for several years. He made it through so many things that he shouldn't have.
I grew up on a farm almost a mile straight north of where they lived. We saw him - and grandma - almost daily. He didn't ask for my help very often, but I knew if he did - I better hustle and help. He was always quick to say 'thank you' for your help!
He instilled hard work and a good work ethic in his children. And because of that, in turn, that was instilled in me by my dad - and mom too! My grandpa farmed his whole life - even after he retired in 2011, he supervised and helped with what he could.
No farm auction was "too far" to go to. You never knew when something good might be there - even if it was a piece of gossip.

I feel very blessed that I knew him for my 40 years and my Mr. knew him for almost 20.
I feel blessed that both of my children got to have them in their lives, for 21 and 10 years.

The next two photos were taken in June, 2011 at Young Mr.'s high school graduation party.

His visitation was a true tribute to him. There were LOTS of people there (many waited almost 2 hours to pay their respects) - many of whom knew him personally. Some who came because they knew one of his children.

This was set up near his casket - his work jacket, hat and boots on a chair from their house. That was the point where I fell apart. It was a perfect tribute!
Photo credit to my brother, Phil

This is his vault cover that Grandma picked out. It is beautiful and again - so perfect!

My grandma with 8 of her children.

I didn't realize that my Mr. had taken this picture of grandma & I talking. If memory serves, we were discussing shopping and how neither of us really likes it.
 Grandma with our kids

Rest in peace, Grandpa! You will be missed.

Hi!

Sorry I have been MIA for a week.

We laid Grandpa to rest last week. We had family to visit with. Work is busy. And frankly, I have just been tired and blogging is one of the last things on my mind.

I am regrouping - trying to get caught up and get back on track.

I hope you have been well. I will get posting again!

Happy Tuesday.

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a nice weekend.

We had dinner with some friends Saturday night - played with their kids. It was a nice evening.

The snow found us again last night - I think I shoveled a good 4 inches of snow this morning. Is it spring yet?

I did a weigh in yesterday and horror of horrors, I gained almost 5 pounds this past week. WHAT?!  So, I now have a further reason to work harder to get the extra weight off and exercise.

Today is the Mr's birthday. I won't say how old he is but wish him a restful day. We took him out for lunch yesterday and ran some errands.

I had kind of a rough night last night, thinking about memories involving my grandpa. I shared many of them with my Mr. and he laughed with me. He said he didn't realize how much we saw our grandparents growing up (almost daily) - which is completely foreign to him. I hold onto the good memories and will write them down for my children.

I wish you all a wonderful week.
HUGS!

A heavy heart

My grandpa passed away last evening.

He was 90. He and my grandma were married, I believe, 67 years. They have 9 children -and their spouses, 32 grandchildren - many with spouses and 18 great-grandchildren. He survived things that surprised us all. He farmed until he was 80, and even then would help in the fields or at least go out to supervise. He got together with the other farmers at the elevator for many years - and I know farmers....they were trading gossip and talking about who paid how much for what.

I know at his age, it should be expected, but it still hurts. I worry about my grandma, as she is in delicate health.

I am sad he's gone, but am thankful that I had 40 years to spend with him, and I am happy to know I have one more angel watching over me.

Accountability

I could make a WHOLE list of excuses, but that is just a cop out. So - here is my confession.

I will be the first to admit - I have REALLY let myself go since Thanksgiving.  I have been eating terribly; not exercising (other than walking around work); and not drinking as much water as I should be.

That being said (and the fact that my pants don't fit quite right now) - I am going to turn things around. (Or at least...that's my plan)  I would like to lose about 5 pounds and get myself back in shape.

I started drinking water this week. I drank 80 ounces on Monday and 144 ounces yesterday. So, I am raising my water glass to Wednesday. Cheers!

My cousin convinced me to sign up for MY FITNESS PAL. I can track what I eat, how much water I drink and my exercise. I am hoping I can get her to encourage me.  (If anyone would like to add me as a friend - I am, jmmcgee1)

The next step is finding a gym to join. I figure if I'm paying for a membership, I will be more likely to go.

Who is with me?

Winter has found us in the Midwest!

The wind chill tomorrow is supposed to be -29F with the forecasted high temp of -3F.  Yes....-3F!!!!  Schools have been cancelled. It is going to be VERY hard to crawl out of bed in the morning and go to work, knowing the rest of my family will be snug at home.

Oh well!

Here's to warmer temps soon!

I know

It's no excuse, BUT - - - -
I haven't blogged because I've been wrapped up in work and holiday preparations. My shopping is ALMOST done - the Mr. and I are planning an outing tonight to finish up. I don't have ANYTHING wrapped yet... So, there will be a wrapping night soon.

Work is getting crazy busy (as usual this time of year) - so I'm pretty zapped when I get home.

I hope you are all having a wonderful holiday season.

Happy Friday!

I know I said I'd do an update - it's been a week...  I will try to work on getting a trip report put together.

Monday I had a medical procedure done that went fine. AND Little Miss made a trip to the ENT with ear pain. It turns out the sticker from her hearing aid battery was stuck in her ear.  Funny now, Monday - not so much!

Tuesday was our work client shopping trip to Chicago. It drizzled most of the day. I had very nice lunch with a girlfriend who works downtown.

Wednesday our furnace went out. They came back yesterday to repair it. Thankfully the outside temps weren't too cold Wednesday night.

Now we have reached the weekend - hooray!
Tonight is my work Christmas party.
Tomorrow I am having lunch with my sister and watching my nephew in the evening.
Sunday I'm off to work.

I hope your week has been good.
What are you up to this weekend?

It's Monday....again!

Thank you for asking your "Ask Jen" questions so far - please keep 'em coming!  I will continue to collect them for about another week and will post my answers December 10.

It was a rainy weekend - ALL weekend! It was that winter grey... I wanted to just stay in bed all weekend, but alas - that was not in the cards.  I worked at the library all day on Saturday then all afternoon yesterday.  Today we are being threatened by Mother Nature with 2-5" of snow and 20-30 mph winds. Yeah - hoping that doesn't happen...

Saturday evening, we went to see/listen to our godson's band regional concert. It was very impressive! These middle school students rehearsed for 5 hours on Saturday (they came from LOTS of schools from 8 counties) and put together a wonderful performance! They came to our house after the concert to have pizza and hang out. It was a nice way to end the day.

How was your weekend? What did you do?

Happy Friday!

Monday, November 17, 2014

Hello Monday

Well this weekend flew by quickly!

The Mr. and I celebrated our anniversary on Saturday. We went to see Interstellar (with Matthew McCoughnhey - sp...). We were not impressed...  It's a very long movie and most of it is incredibly dull! We did enjoy our dinner at Ruby Tuesday's though.

Yesterday morning, I had a beautiful family brave the snow and cold temps for their family Christmas/winter photos. You can check out a few of my favorites at my photo blog. I am very happy with how they turned out.

Winter is upon us here in northern Illinois - the high temp over the next 5 days is 23F (I believe on Thursday).

How was your weekend?

Happy Anniversary!

17 years ago, on a surprisingly snowy day, I married my best friend!

Christmas in Snow Valley is packed with six wonderful Christmas novellas sure to bring romance into your holiday season.

Although the kiss is incredible, Lucy never expects to see the guy again. Is it bad luck or destiny when Lucy comes down with a sore throat and the new doctor in Snow Valley is none other than the guy she kissed at the airport?
Feels Like Love by Jeanette Lewis
Christmas in Snow Valley is the perfect way for April Winston to introduce her city slicker fiancé, Scott Mecham, to life on a farm. If only Wade Hadley, hometown boy and high school sweetheart, will cooperate! But Wade has no intention of letting April go without a fight. This Christmas, Wade is determined to overcome their painful past and show April that she already has what she’s been seeking all along.
Full Court Devotion by Cami Checketts
Kazlyn is too busy with her schooling and future plans to enjoy life, let alone fall in love with a man who has heartbreak written all over him. Tyrese Hamilton, a college basketball star and major heartthrob, is intrigued when Kazlyn doesn’t pursue him or even seem interested. Ty’s career is in jeopardy, and he needs a miracle and Kazlyn to save him.
The Christmas Eve Kiss by Taylor Hart
When Molly O’Hare gets a prediction that she will kiss her true love on Christmas Eve, she thinks it’s utterly ridiculous. But when she gets teamed up with Kevin Snow, aka her ex-boyfriend, to decorate a Christmas tree, things start to change. Too bad getting over the past is hard and seeing him kiss another girl is even harder. Now Molly is left with a choice—run away from home and heartbreak or let Christmas work out a miracle all of its own.
Risking it all for Love by Kimberley Montpetit
Succumbing to family pressure, Jessica Mason reluctantly comes home for Christmas. Ever since her high school boyfriend’s death from a car accident three years earlier, Jessica and religion have not been compatible. So, when she visits Michael’s grave, she’s surprised to meet the handsome James Douglas, Pastor John’s nephew, who’s studying for the ministry. James can not only dish back
Jessica’s finely-tuned sarcasm but understands grief all too well, turning Jessica’s world upside down. Is she ready to take another risk on love?
Blue Christmas by Lucy McConnell
As head of Snow Valley hospital’s fundraising effort, Paisley Hackett barely has time to organize the craft show, cookie decorating party, and the annual Christmas Ball. What she doesn’t have time for is falling in love with Clay Jett, the incredibly handsome bass player who sweeps into town. She’s been burned by a tourist romance before and, with everything going on, Paisley will have to work overtime to protect her heart from Clay and his swoon-worthy ballads.

My review:  5 out of 5 stars
These are all sweet, clean romance novellas based in the little down of Snow Valley. The characters and storylines are all believable and fun. I thought they were all quick reads and enjoyed them all.

A small treat

Yesterday was a frustrating Monday morning at work. I felt like I had to fight everyone on getting stuff done and phone calls made. I think it was made more frustrating by the fact that I had had a wonderful weekend taking lots of photos and spending lots of time with Little Miss and my camera.

When a client called me at lunchtime to ask if I had an gotten an answer for him...I almost lost it. So, I decided to take the bull by the horns and go to the client myself. So, I took the papers, made up a little goodie bag (candy, crackers, water, etc) got in my van and drove out to the country. It was a beautiful day, so it didn't bother me to get out of the office for a bit.

I drove out to the field he was working in, parked and waited for him to get to the end of the field round. He signed what I needed him to, we visited a little bit then we both went back to work.

This daughter/granddaughter/great-granddaughter of farmers loved the smell of corn being harvested and the sound of all the machinery running. It was a little treat for me. I hope there are more harvest visits soon.

New book release!

Prosecco Pink by Traci Andrighetti
Release Date: November 3
Genre: Chick Lit/Cozy Mystery

For Franki Amato, life in New Orleans is anything but “The Big Easy.” When she met handsome bank executive Bradley Hartmann, she knew she’d finally found a man she could trust. But she can’t say the same for his sexy new secretary, who is about as trustworthy as Mata Hari and every bit as seductive. Meanwhile, Franki’s best friend and employer, Veronica Maggio, has named her the lead investigator in the murder of a gorgeous cosmetics CEO who was found lying dead in the master bedroom of a historic plantation home. Now the pressure is on Franki to figure out what a bottle of pink lip gloss and the legend of a pink diamond have to do with the bizarre killing. The problem is that the plantation is notorious for being haunted, and Franki is less than enthusiastic about the prospect of meeting a ghost. Adding to her stress, her Sicilian grandma is up to her usual meddling antics—this time planning Franki’s engagement to Bradley before he’s even considered popping the question. As Bradley grows distant and plantation employees begin dropping like Southern belles during a sweltering summer, Franki turns to a psychic with a phobia of ghosts to solve the mysterious murders and her own relationship fears.

Traci's bio
Traci Andrighetti is the national and international bestselling author of the Franki Amato Mysteries. In her previous life, she was an award-winning literary translator and a Lecturer of Italian at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a PhD in Applied Linguistics. But then she got wise and ditched that academic stuff for a life of crime—writing, that is.
If she's not hard at work on her next novel, Traci is probably watching her favorite Italian soap opera, eating Tex Mex or sampling fruity cocktails, and maybe all at the same time. She lives in Austin with her husband, young son (who desperately wants to be in one of her books) and three treat-addicted dogs.
